The swimming pool in Kőér street is home to many world famous Hungarian swimmers and water polo players. In addition, the institution is one of the most important junior training centres in Budapest.
The swimming pool was opened in 1983 in the Kőér street sports grounds of Spartacus. The aim was to provide the swimming and water polo branch of the „Spari” (nickname for Spartacus) with an adequate institution. Only licensed athletes have been allowed to use the pool since then. However, the newest idea is to open up the Kőér street pool for leisure time sportspeople as well.
In the beginning only the athletes of Spartacus were allowed to use the institution – amongst them many Olympic and world champion medallists – but the water polo players of Honvéd started to train here as well in the late 90s. In 2004 the team – going by the name DOMINO-BHSE – won the Hungarian championship, the Champions League (called Euroleague at the time), and the European Super Cup as well.
At present the pool is home to the Groupama Honvéd, and it can accommodate 700 spectators for the matches.
The swimming and water polo branches handle junior training at a very serious level thus several hundred children get introduced to the basics of water sports in the Kőér Street Swimming Pool on a daily basis.
